Rivian is considering opening its cars to AI agents developed by other companies, including Anthropic. Its founder and CEO, RJ Scaringe, outlined this direction at TechCrunch Disrupt this week, TechCrunch reports. He gave no implementation date, and the company provided no further details about the integration.
The automaker recently rolled out an assistant that allows occupants to interact with its electric vehicles by voice. Rivian says it has its own system for interpreting requests and routing them to the relevant functions. According to Scaringe, this system can choose between a model running in the vehicle and models available in the cloud, depending on the complexity of the request.
The proposed next step is to integrate products from AI labs and bring the context of conversations held on another device into the car. This continuity remains a scenario described by the executive. He acknowledges that it still requires technical work and coordination with the labs.
Scaringe also sets a limit: the agents would not be given control of braking or steering. The stated focus is therefore on assistance and continuity of conversations. The available information does not allow an assessment of the reliability of this future integration or the precise arrangements for accessing personal context.
