OpenAI, Anthropic and Nvidia each recorded their most expensive quarter for lobbying between July and September, The Verge reports, citing federal disclosures. Nvidia spent $2.2 million, Anthropic $2.1 million and OpenAI $1.5 million. These figures measure reported spending without establishing its influence on public policy decisions.

The issues covered show the breadth of the interests involved. Anthropic reported lobbying on issues including online child safety, export controls and a bill aimed at making data center developers bear their energy costs. OpenAI addressed cybersecurity evaluations of advanced models, AI safety oversight frameworks and copyright. Nvidia worked on issues including competition, quantum computing and exports.

The increase is notable for these companies, but The Verge points out that such levels are not exceptional among major technology companies already established in Washington. The records therefore primarily indicate how their own efforts have evolved.

These disclosures suggest that AI companies are seeking to influence several aspects of their business, beyond rules governing models alone. However, they do not make it possible to attribute any specific legislative change to their efforts or determine which positions actually persuaded public authorities.
