Meta plans to release the final system update for Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets by March 2027, according to an announcement reported on Monday by The Verge. The planned version is v213. The manufacturer distinguishes this end to system enhancements from continued security patches and critical bug fixes, which it says will run through the end of 2027.
Applications compatible with these headsets can still be submitted through December 2027, Meta says. However, this does not guarantee that every application will be available at that point or that its publisher will continue developing it. The timeline concerns the support terms announced for the platform.
Meta now presents Quest 3 and 3S as the baseline for players in its virtual reality ecosystem. The company highlights their performance headroom and mixed reality features. These remain the manufacturer’s arguments.
Quest 2 launched in 2020 and Quest Pro in 2022; sales of both were discontinued in 2024. For owners, the announcement makes the distinction between security maintenance and feature development clearer. For developers, it could encourage a shift in focus toward newer devices, without establishing on its own when each application will be abandoned.
